The Art of Legally-Defensible FBAs and BIPs/PBSPs

Writer: EdLaw InteractiveEdLaw Interactive

What makes a good functional behavioral assessment (FBA)? A comprehensive FBA is the basis for a great behavior intervention plan (BIP) or positive behavior support plan (PBSP). So why is it so difficult to find excellent examples? In this full-day, in-person training, school law attorney Erin D. Gilsbach takes a deep-dive into special education caselaw to determine what the courts and hearing officers have said about FBAs and BIPs/PBSPs. The session goes through a step-by-step process on how to conduct comprehensive, defensible, and useful FBAs, from how to do them, what should be included, and who should be involved. It also explores the process for developing a BIP/PBSP based upon that information, providing IEP teams with tips and tools for drafting great documents. Atty. Gilsbach provides helpful best practices that will assist schools in improving their practices and common pitfalls for schools to avoid. This session is a must for anyone who is responsible for creating FBAs and BIPs/PBSPs.

Who should attend? Special Education Directors and Supervisors, Special Education Case Managers, School Counselors, BCBAs and other Behavior Support Personnel, Special Education Teachers, and School Psychologists.
